Fakehost Guide
Are you interested in a customized fakehost while using the Global Gamers network? Below is a brief guide we've established on the basic rules and usage of our fakehost service. If you have any additional questions regarding our fakehost service, be sure to contact a member of our Support Team in #GlobalGamers on the network! We hope you'll enjoy this wonderful customizable security feature we've made available to you free of charge!
What is a fakehost?
A fakehost is something that covers your IP and host so that if people look up information
on you while you are on IRC, they see the fakehost rather than your real IP. Fakehosts
can help prevent a malicious user from obtaining your IP and attacking your computer, and
they can be used to advertise your affiliation with a group or organization.
How can I get a fakehost?
Every registered user on GG automatically has access to a default fakehost,
which is accountname.user.globalgamers.net. GG staff members can
also set a custom fakehost if you want it to read differently, subject to our fakehost
guidelines.
What are the guidelines for registering a fakehost?
- Any fakehost involving the name of another person or organization requires their permission.
- If you want your fakehost to be a domain name, you must be prepared to show proof of ownership or proof that you have express permission to use it.
- Avoid using hateful or obscene language.
- Fakehosts are not to be used for ban evasion or for spamming channels.
Please be aware that any violation of the above guidelines may result in removal of your custom fakehost and suspension from being able to use a new one.
Can I give my entire channel access to the same fakehost?
Custom fakehosts can be registered to either an individual user or a channel. With
channel fakehosts, the owner of the channel can specify an access level to determine who
on the user list can use the fakehost.
How can I use a channel fakehost?
If you are on a channel's user list with appropriate access, you can apply the fakehost to
your account with either of the following commands:
/msg ChanServ usefakehost #channel
or
!usefakehost (Any command prefixed with a ! must be typed in that channel.)
Please note that setting a channel fakehost will overwrite any other fakehost on your
account.
How do I automatically log in to my fakehost every time I log in with NickServ?
If you would like to use your fakehost every time you auth to your account, you would
auth with NickServ and type the following command:
/msg NickServ set autohide on
Please be aware that once you enable a fakehost during your session, you will need to
disconnect and reconnect to the network if you want to remove it.
What if I don't want to have a fakehost on all of the time?
If you do not wish to automatically enable the fakehost but you want to apply it to your
account for your current session, use the following command, replacing "yournick" with
your nickname:
/mode yournick +x
mIRC users can also type the following command exactly as given:
//mode $me +x
